Hay muchos trastornos que pueden afectar a múltiples partes del organismo. Estos pueden estar causados por bacterias, virus, sustancias venenosas o tóxicas en el medio ambiente y otros peligros para la salud. Los trastornos que afectan a múltiples sistemas y aparatos también pueden heredarse o desarrollarse mientras el animal todavía está en el útero. Las enfermedades o afecciones que afectan a múltiples aparatos y sistemas también pueden describirse como sistémicas o generalizadas.

Muchos trastornos se tratan en este capítulo. A un listado de afecciones congénitas y hereditarias le sigue un análisis de los trastornos más importantes, que se han ordenado alfabéticamente por nombre médico para ayudarle a localizar fácilmente una enfermedad o afección concreta.
