Household Hazards for Pet Birds

ByLaurie Hess, DVM, DABVP, The MSD Veterinary Manual

While it's nice for birds to spend time outside their cages, it can also be risky. They can be hurt easily or get into dangerous things around the house. Here are some common things that can be harmful to your bird:

  • Glass windows and mirrors: Birds can fly into these and get hurt.

  • Open windows and doors and rotating ceiling fans: Birds also commonly fly into these and get injured.

  • Household poisons: Many everyday items can be toxic to birds, including cleaners (such as bleach, ammonia, and toilet bowl and oven cleaners), certain plants (like calla lilies, mistletoe, and poinsettia), beauty and personal care products (including nail polish remover, hair dye, deodorants, rubbing alcohol, and sunscreen), and some foods (like avocado).

  • Open flames: Birds can fly into open flames, such as on stovetops or in fireplaces.

  • Electrical cords: Birds chew on cords and can be electrocuted.

  • Glue: Birds commonly fly into and get stuck on insect and rodent glue traps.

  • Water: Birds can drown when they fall into open toilets, sinks, or tubs of water or fly into open pans of liquid on the stovetop.

  • Fumes: Birds’ respiratory tracts are very sensitive to chemical fumes (including gasoline, pesticides, perfumes, and other sprays).

Always keep an eye on your bird to prevent accidents and keep it safe when it’s out of its cage. Make sure to close windows and doors before letting your bird out.
