Heartworm disease, echocardiogram, short-axis view, dog

Echocardiogram showing left and right ventricles in a 10-year-old pit bull-type dog with pigmenturia, anemia, and clinical signs of low-output heart failure. A cluster of heartworms is visible within the open tricuspid valve. The echogenic cuticles of the worms create hyperechoic parallel lines that look like long, bright equal signs (*). The right ventricle is dilated, and the free wall is hypertrophied. The interventricular septum shows flattening. LV, left ventricle; RV, right ventricle; RVFW, right ventricular free wall.
